First: Your Money Was Never "Paid" to Anyone
Proof of funds is evidence, not a fee. Whether the visa is approved or refused, the money in your bank account remains yours. What varies is when you can move it and what any service around it cost you:
- Your own savings: yours throughout; after a refusal you can withdraw immediately — though hold off if you plan to reapply soon (more below)
- GIC (Canada): if refused, you apply to the bank (Scotiabank, RBC, CIBC) for a full GIC refund — standard process, refunded to the source account, usually within 4–8 weeks with your refusal letter as evidence
- Germany blocked account: refunded on presentation of the refusal letter, minus provider fees

Decode the Refusal Before Touching Anything
Your refusal letter states the ground. Financial refusals come in flavours, and each has a different fix:

Immediately, in almost every case. The UK, Canada, the US, and Schengen states have no mandatory waiting period after a standard refusal. The real constraint is readiness:
- If the defect was documentation, you can fix and refile within weeks
- If the defect was fund seasoning, your timeline is the seasoning window itself (28 days for the UK; ideally 3–6 months of history for Canada)
- A refusal for deception (fake documents) is different — that carries a 10-year ban for the UK and long inadmissibility elsewhere. This is why we say it loudly: never touch fake or backdated statements
Does a refusal hurt the next application? You must declare it, and the officer will read the previous ground. A reapplication that squarely fixes the stated defect — ideally with a short cover letter naming the previous refusal and showing what changed — is approved every day. What fails is resubmitting the same file and hoping for a different officer.
The Reapplication Checklist
- Get the refusal ground in writing (request the GCMS/CAIPS notes for Canada — they show the officer's actual reasoning)
- Fix the specific defect — not everything else around it
- Rebuild the financial evidence cleanly: correct amount, eligible account holder, full seasoning, verification-proof bank
- Add a one-page cover letter: "Previous application refused on X; this application addresses it by Y"
- Recheck every non-financial document too — a second refusal on a new ground burns months
